This was a bit of a slap in the face to me. My boyfriend and I were driving along and we were discussing the welfare system. I have always taken the position of being totally against welfare and having things be survival of the fittest/every man for himself/whoever works the hardest gets the mostest. Yes, I understand that some people may have disabilities or medical bills or have lost their house in a fire, but there are also a lot of people bumming off the welfare system and I don't want to pay to have people sit at home and play video games or drink beer or watch TV or smoke weed.
I think a better system would be to, instead of just giving people money, give people work and jobs and education and tools to learn technology and skills and things they need to help them become a functioning member of society. Don't give a man to fish, teach him to fish.
My boyfriend said this was a very idealistic view.
He also pointed out that I was raised my whole life in Johnson County (one of the richest counties in the country) with one of the best school districts in a specialized accelerated program with a dad who had always made 6 figures and that I had never known anything but hard core republicanism. I am what is known as a "Johnson County Princess" or for those of you who don't know anything about Johnson County and aren't from that part of the country, I have "Disney Princess Syndrome".
He said I'm now 19, at the age when I'm forming my own ideals and values.
I asked him if keeping the views I had always been taught was narrow minded.
He said "no", but "not at least investigating other views and being open to other possibilities is."
Something to think about I guess.
