So I promised on my Facebook page that I would do a little bit of "social commentary" on THIS ARTICLE that was advertised on the NEDA page. You will notice that the article, as you scroll through, is basically a compilation of before and after pictures of girls with and without makeup on. These particular pictures show a marked difference between the faces, even effecting the expression of the girl.
Let me say from the get go that whether or not a girl wears makeup is her own deal. I myself choose not to wear makeup simply because it's expensive and time consuming and annoying to have to take off at night when I want to simply collapse into bed. The problem that I find with this is the fact that girls often see these pictures of women with makeup and think that that's how they look all the time, especially young girls.
I think when we see a girl with hair and makeup done, we need to understand that it simply is just a girl like the rest of us with hair and makeup. Is it beautiful? Yes. Do we need to feel obligated to look like that or feel the need to compete with her? No. That's like comparing our behind the scenes with her highlight reel.
Hair and makeup are pretty! They're fun! And I think they only become a problem when we begin to confuse that with reality.
I so agree!!! Also I think it becomes a problem when we are not okay with ourselves without that stuff. I wear mascara every day, because I think it makes the blue/gray of my eyes look nice. But if I forget it one day? Oh well. I would reassess if I forgot it one day and refused to go out without it. THAT would be a problem. I don't mean that being concerned with ones' appearance is a problem. But obsession with anything is recipe for disaster.
